The National Workload Agreement

The National Workload Agreement’s primary aim is to ensure that the focus of teachers’ time and effort is kept, as far as possible, on teaching and learning in the classroom, and away from administrative activities and providing cover for absent colleagues. The agreement also includes the requirement for schools to provide planning, preparation and assessment (PPA) time for teachers.

This has necessarily led to a reorganisation of activity within many schools, and frequently to support staff being given increased or additional responsibilities. This change can be very positive for the school, the pupils and the staff concerned, but only if effective support is provided, based upon a detailed and careful consideration of the skills, potential and confidence of the support staff.
