Help
SEN Reference is ideal for teachers, teaching assistants, parent
helpers, governors — in fact, everyone involved in teaching
and learning.
Using the categories set out in the new Code of Practice (Communication and interaction; Cognition and learning;
Behaviour, emotional and social development; Sensory and/or Physical), SEN Reference includes:
- definitions of conditions from autism to visual impairment, from aphasia to Tourette’s syndrome, and from cerebral palsy to spina bifida
- clear pedagogical guidance
- realistic suggestions for the effective use of ICT
- practical solutions to access issues (particularly relating to ICT use)
- glossaries of SEN and ICT terminology.
The menu bars within SEN Reference highlight whichever section of the disc you are currently in. You can return to the front screen of the disc at any time by clicking on SEN reference at the top left of any screen.
Throughout SEN Reference, you can click on the orange text to access popup windows or expanded text offering further information, or to link to other areas. Clicking on orange text which has a world icon next to it will open a new Web browser window and take you to a related Web site.
To open the glossaries, you need to have Adobe Reader, or other software capable of viewing PDF files. If your computer does not already have this installed, look in the Installers folder for the appropriate installer for your operating system.
Note: Within SEN Reference, the term 'ICT' is used to cover ICT/ILT, ie all information and communication technology that may be used to support teaching and learning. In addition, the term 'pupil' may be used to mean any age of pupil or student, from early years to post-16 and adult.
